Tuning the Summer Cottage
Going to our summer cottage is one of the must-to-do things in the summer. It is actually a must-to-do also in the Christmas time, Easter and during other longer holidays. The custom of going to the summer cottage is one that is deeply rooted in the Finnish culture. Summer cottage is a sanctuary where people relax, go to sauna, swim in the lake and grill sausages and ribs on the fire. There has never been a summer during which I haven’t been to the summer cottage, even as a child. Nowadays some adults say it is difficult to persuade the kids to join the parents at the summer cottage, but I believe it just depends on what the summer cottage and the parents have to offer.
I would say that a key to a successful summer cottage experience is to have enough things to do and to make the summer cottage and its surroundings appealing. For example, five years back we decided to really put some effort into tuning our summer cottage. Outside we installed some monkey swings for the kids and bought a water bicycle, and some smaller outside games, too. The kids loved them immediately, and now their friends also want to come by! On the inside, we put some effort into updating the house, nonetheless, staying true to the rural feel of the cottage. One of the biggest changes was the renewing of the fireplace we had. Our previous fireplace was leaking heat and was more of an oven type. Now, we decided to invest and get a fireplace that would reserve heat properly and also please the eye. After acquiring the fireplace, we also acquired a new tradition of spending the evenings together by the fireplace playing board games. It is great to see everyone enjoying themselves without any so called generation gap.
